Martins, or Frederick Martin as it was first known, has been a fixture on Leys Avenue since 1936, when Morris Reed started the business of supplying all types of household furniture. Giving great value and friendly customer service to a loyal local customer base, the company grew from strength to strength through both good and challenging economic times – including one World War and a couple of recessions.

After 40 years of hard work, Morris retired in 1976 and passed down the business to two of his sons, Norman and Raymond Reed, who have been at the helm ever since and expanded the business to where it is today with 10 retail outlets in a row covering over 20,000 sq ft.

In November 2008, Norman with his wife Ruth retired. Raymond is currently in semi retirement. The overall management of the business has been passed down to another member of the family – Stephen White, Ruth’s younger brother.

Stephen, who worked at Martins on Saturdays and in his school holidays during the 1970’s, is joining the firm with over 25 years business management and marketing experience and intends to operate Martins on very much a “Business As Usual” basis, i.e.,offering friendly customer service, great value and a one-stop shop for all types of furniture. Martins can still supply a complete house with everything from beds to carpets and rugs, from three piece suites to dining furniture, wardrobes to a fantastic new range of electric lift and recline chairs

“I am honoured to have been asked to take over the management of the business, and am confident that Martins will continue to serve the local and surrounding community in the same friendly way that it has since 1936,” said Stephen.

Martins is proud to be a member of the Federation of Small Businesses.
